29. Matter Does Not Thin Out Beyond the Solar System, It Gets Denser

The two Voyager probes, launched in 1977, are the first human-made objects to leave the heliosphere, the bubble of solar wind plasma surrounding the Sun, and enter true interstellar space. Voyager 1 crossed that boundary, the heliopause, in 2012; Voyager 2 followed in 2018. Both instruments recorded a sharp jump in plasma density on crossing, roughly a factor of 20 to 40 increase, from about 0.002 particles per cubic centimetre inside the heliosphere to around 0.04 to 0.1 particles per cubic centimetre in the interstellar medium beyond it, an unexpectedly substantial and structured plasma environment, not an emptying void. An infinite universe filled with the same eternal substrate at every scale is entirely consistent with matter and plasma persisting, not thinning toward nothing, as one moves outward from any local region [P5].
