26. Inflation Is an Unphysical Patch, Invented Specifically to Rescue the Horizon Problem

Why do causally disconnected regions of the sky show the same temperature? The standard model's own answer is that a period of inflation, an exponential expansion stretching a causally connected patch of space to encompass the entire observable universe in a fraction of a second, forced distant regions into thermal contact before they could otherwise have exchanged energy. No known physical field has ever been observed to drive this kind of expansion. It has never been recreated, observed directly, or independently confirmed by any experiment; the inflaton field is postulated specifically because the horizon problem needs it, not because anything else in physics predicts it. It is a mechanism invented after the fact to rescue a model from a problem that model's own premises created. An infinite, eternal universe removes the need for any such rescue: it has had unlimited time for every region to reach thermal equilibrium with every other region, with no exponential expansion episode, inflaton field, or any other untestable, purpose-built addition required [P5].
