Working Memory
A limited-capacity cognitive system that temporarily holds and manipulates information needed for ongoing mental tasks such as reasoning, comprehension, and learning. Classic estimates put its capacity at around seven items, though more recent research suggests the true limit for many types of information is closer to three or four. It is distinguished from long-term memory by its limited capacity and short duration.
